Is underlayment required for metal roofing?

Underlayment is standard beneath metal roofing and part of a proper installation. It provides a clean substrate and a secondary moisture barrier under the panels. On Central Texas projects, we can even install metal over an existing roof in many cases when code allows, and that assembly still uses proper underlayment. Final underlayment type and details are confirmed after an on-site inspection. One installer’s tell: we adjust deck prep and clip spacing first, then match the underlayment so the system can move without telegraphing lines. The simplest next step is to schedule an inspection to verify if your deck is ready and which underlayment is right.
Updated: 2026-04-01
Need help in Austin, TX?
