Does a metal roof attract lightning?

A metal roof does not attract lightning. Lightning is driven by height, isolation, and the path to ground, not by whether your roof is metal or another material. If a strike does occur, metal roofing can safely conduct energy when part of a properly bonded system, and the panels themselves are noncombustible, which helps reduce fire risk from embers. Actual lightning protection (air terminals, bonding, grounding) is an electrical specialty and is designed separately from the roofing system. We install and service metal roofs for homeowners around Bee Cave, and our guidance here matches common industry practice. For peace of mind, ask a licensed pro about surge protection and bonding if you plan a lightning protection system.
Updated: 2026-04-01
Need help in Bee Cave, TX?
